Senator-elect Cardin was member of the House of Representatives for the state of Maryland prior to being elected to the Senate. As a member of the House of Representatives, Senator-elect Cardin co-sponsored the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act, the NATO Bridging Force, and the Presidential Special Envoy. He also voted in favor of the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act, Funding Amendment for Protection, Funding Amendment for Humanitarian Aid, NATO Bridging Force, and Presidential Special Envoy. He will carry his grade over to the Senate based upon his performance in the House of Representatives.
In response to the release of the Darfur scorecard Rep. Cardin said: “As the senior Democrat on the U.S. Helsinki Commission, I want to see those who are responsible for the atrocities in Darfur brought to justice before a war crimes tribunal, similar to what has happened with officials from the former Yugoslavia. I am pleased that the United Nations recently authorized a peacekeeping force for Darfur with a stronger mandate to protect civilians. I join the international community in its commitment to end the horror and misery that continues to engulf Darfur. We must remain united in efforts to stop the genocide and to end the humanitarian crisis.”
Rep. Cardin hosted a House cable show with Rep. Payne, the ranking member of the Africa Subcommittee of the International Relations Committee, and Jemera Rone of Human Rights Watch, so that constituents in Maryland could be further educated on this issue.
On June 8, 2006 he wrote an article on Darfur.
On December 12, 2005 Rep. Cardin wrote a letter to President Bush urging aid for the people of Darfur.
On April 30, 2006 he attended the Save Darfur rally in Washington and was recognized by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi for his efforts on war crimes issues.
