Additional Information
In response to the release of the Darfur scorecard, Rep. Andrews said: “I am proud to have earned an A on the Genocide Intervention Network’s Darfur scorecard. This is an important tool for people to use to learn what their elected officials are doing to end this atrocity. The genocide in Darfur is a tragedy that demands a global response. Unfortunately, this response has so far been far too tepid and too slow. While efforts to expand peacekeeping in Darfur and negotiations with the Sudanese government are important, it is critical to remember that the killing of Darfuris continues. That is why I have fought for the U.S. to provide more money to the African Mission forces in Sudan and additional humanitarian aid to Darfur. The Bush Administration must also support a stronger UN peacekeeping and relief mission for the region. Ending the violence in Darfur is both a moral responsibility and in US security interests.”
In June 2006, Rep. Andrews co-signed a letter to Sec. Condoleezza Rice asking to strengthen restrictions on the trafficking of small arms and light weapons (SALW) at the UN meeting at the end of the month on SALW rules.
In April 2006, he co-signed the Schwartz-Tancredo letter to President Bush asking that he raise the issue of Darfur in summit with Chinese Premier Hu Jintao. The issue was raised on an April 20 summit, and China did not prevent April 25 sanctions on Sudanese war criminals.
In April 2006, Rep. Andrews co-signed a letter to Sec. Rice asking for the appointment of a special envoy for Darfur.
In February 2006, he co-signed a letter to Bush calling for UN peacekeeping force with Reps. Payne, Wolf, Capuano, Tancredo, Van Hollen and Rangel.
In January 2006, Rep. Andrews co-signed a letter to Egypt calling for them to protect Sudanese refugees and not send them back to Sudan.
In November 2005, he co-signed a letter to Sec. Rice asking for clarification of Sudan policy.
Rep. Andrews is the honorary co-chair of South Jersey Interfaith Coalition to Save Darfur. The group has raised awareness about and funds for Darfur. The group sent five busloads of people to the April 30, 2006, Save Darfur rally in Washington, DC.
On April 26, 2006, he participated in videoconference with students of Voorhees Middle School who have formed group to raise awareness about Darfur, written letters to policy makers, and have sent over $5,000 to Darfur-related charities.
Rep. Andrews authored an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 5122) which directs the secretary of defense to report on his plans to promote peace in Darfur. The amendment was included en bloc in committee markup.
He gave a floor speech in support of passage of the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act.
On June 2006, Rep. Andrews co-signed a letter to a USAID administrator asking that they fill the gaps in the World Food Program funding for Darfur.
He co-sponsored H.R. 675 expressing disapproval of the Arab League's decision to hold its 2006 summit in Khartoum, Sudan, and calling on the Arab League, the government of Sudan, the Sudanese rebels and the world community to do all they can to end acts of genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.
